1906 before the Governor

HB 1906 Improving Mathematics and Science education, , has passed and is awaiting the governor's signature. The bill calls for independent Math and Science Advisory panels comprised of mathematicians, scientists, teachers, and parents--all with no conflicts of interest. Concerns: SBE has already preempted 1906 by hiring a consultant and a panel without mathematicians. Panel members may not be allowed to submit any of their OWN information. 1906 calls for no more than three curricula which school districts could be required to use. The Math Coaching Program, controlled by OSPI, is unnecessary. If students were taught math well DURING school and the after school program shouldn't be needed. 1906 creates a new, unnecessary math director.

Prof. Cliff Mass and Virginia Warfield in an interview with Ross Reynolds on "the Conversation", aired March 13, 2007. The segment starts at 2:35.

New-age math doesn't add up

April 22, 2007, by Bruce Ramsey, the Seattle Times
"It's called reform math, discovery math, constructivist math, fuzzy math. I think of it as new-age math, and believe it is one reason why last year nearly half the 10th-graders in Washington public schools failed the mathematics portion of the high-school graduation test. ... more

Current standards are inadequate

"... In today's reform math, verbose explanations are central, whether the answer is right or wrong. ... Wealthier parents can afford the intensive tutoring required to salvage their children's math education, while the less advantaged are doomed to mediocrity."
by Laura Brandt, published in the Seattle Post Intelligencer, March 13

Reform math curricula, not inconsistency, is the reason for poor performance on math WASL
"... frustrated parents are sending their children to private tutors or to tutoring centers such as Kumon. Some are even home schooling in math..."
